Wikitravel talk:Tips for new contributors

From Wikitravel
Jump to: navigation, search

I wanted to start this page to give new contributors some initial tips on the software. Feel free to add new suggestions; remember to be welcoming! --Evan 21:30, 5 Apr 2004 (EDT)

default place for comments from newcomers[edit]

You are the most important resource Wikitravel has. Please feel free to ask questions, make comments, request help, or anything else you need. Your knowledge makes Wikitravel a better guide; your comments on our processes makes Wikitravel a better project.

Please consider to give some single link for newcomers in this paragraph so it doesn't remain so dead-ended. What is the best place for a newcomer to leave his question if he doesn't know where to start? -- DenisYurkin 20:32, 20 Sep 2005 (EDT)

Collegiate behaviour and use of edit summaries[edit]

With this edit User:OVK

changed (amongst other changes)

9. Once you have a user account, other Wikitravellers can send you messages through your user talk page. When there are new messages on your talk page, you'll see the text You have a new message from another user in an orange box at the top of any Wikitravel page until you visit your user Talk page. You should check to see what someone has written.

9. Once you have a user account, other Wikitravellers can send you messages through your user talk page. When there are new messages on your talk page, you'll see a blinking red circle next to the "my talk" link on any Wikitravel page. You should check to see what someone has to say. (italicisation added)

I haven't seen any of these blinking red circles for many years - am I unique in feeling that his edit (with no edit summary or other explanation) is misleading? --W. Franke-mailtalk 13:08, 18 May 2013 (EDT)

My edit was a semi mistake, I clicked on undo to deleted the part of your edit where you changes the last tip, did not mean to change the statement concerning the red message circle change, but the undo function did not work the way I intended, sorry for that. I have corrected my mistake now. But please do not change these policy pages in the future without a consensus from the admins, especially give them a negative spin.. --OVK (talk) 04:24, 19 May 2013 (EDT)
