A protected page is one that has been locked to prevent editing by ordinary users. This may happen for a number of reasons, including:
- The page contains information that should not be changed. Such as template text used on special pages.
- The page contains information that must remain unchanged, for legal reasons.
- The page has been subjected to unwanted edits and less restrictive solutions have failed to resolve the issue.
Administrators can protect and unprotect pages. They should follow the Protected page policy and Protected page guidelines for protecting and unprotecting pages.
Protected pages are automatically listed on Special:Protectedpages. A log of page protection activity can be viewed in the protected page log.
The reason that a page is protected should be explained on Wikitravel:Protected pages.
