[edit] Travel guides

The travel guides listed here may be a useful source of information for contributors. These guides are listed here because WikiTravel articles do not normally include links to individual articles in travel guides.

Please be aware that the content of these sites are almost certainly subject to copyright. However they may be useful for verifying the factual accuracy and originality of already written articles.

[edit] Global

  • GoSleepGo .Com - User-centric travel guide.
  • Hostel World .Com - Has useful information about a range of destinations with hostels and budget hotels.
  • Lonely Planet .Com - Just in case you do not know about this famous publisher of printed travel guides, this is their website.
  • Road Junky .Com A travel guide with travel stories submitted by travellers. Some interesting content.
  • Virtual Tourist .Com A commercial travel guide with lots of advertising. But also has a user forum and some interesting commentary about places around the world ... if you can find it. Google may search it better.
  • World66 - A contributor edited guide like Wikitravel - Apparently has the same copyright licence as Wikitravel, but does not seem to be as ethical about copyright - use with care.
  • Nozio - Worldwide travel guide with indepth travel information and with direct links to hotel's official sites.
  • Economist Cities Guide - Has useful information, but only for a few cities.
  • Other commercial guides like Open World and websites like Hotel Masters are often little more than advertising link farms, with limited content about a destination, though lots about their advertisers businesses. Ideal if you follow the sharemarket and need to see your money working, or want to book into a hotel once you know its name and reputation. Why businesses even pay money to advertise with these services, when it can be done on Wikitravel, for free, is a great mystery of the information age. Perhaps their advertisers can't think, because they have too much money. Try using one of these sites as a traveler might use Wikitravel ....

[edit] Search Engines

Lastly, do not forget the humble search engine and similar robots. They can do a pretty good job at finding every page with a place name, or any other word combination, on it. Sometimes they can turn up information that is no longer published on the original website. It is surprising how much information actually gets copied rather than being original writing.
