RSS Feeds for updated info on Wikitravel
I've started an RSS feed for the information on the Main Page that we update regularly: Discover, Travel news, DotM, OtBP, CotW, etc. The goal is to make it easy for people who use RSS feed readers and don't visit Wikitravel regularly to keep up-to-date with new things that are happening on the site. (With the hope, of course, being that something strikes their fancy and they come read it or even -- dare we dream? -- improve it.) Right now the feed only includes Discover items, but I'll be adding more to it in the future.
As a test, I've added the bits of HTML necessary for the feed to show up as an "alternate" on each Wikitravel page; if you're using Firefox or IE7 (I think) this should allow one-click subscription. If this works out OK and there are no objections, I'd like to add the feed to the MediaWiki:Sidebar, too.
Finally, I'd like to make a separate feed for people more involved in the project -- logbook entries, Wikitravel:Requests for comment discussions, new vandalism listings, that kind of thing. But that's probably a little down the line.
I hope that this experience will help us come up with some ways to make making feeds easier, and thus put the decisions about what goes into the feed more in the hands of the community. I think this is necessary in order to make feeds available for the other language versions, too.
