There's now a new message indicator for users who are logged in. If someone leaves a message on your user talk page, you should see an (obnoxious) little red blinking light next to your "my talk" link. If you read your user talk page, it should clear the indicator. (If this doesn't work, you may need to clear your cache by holding down "Control" and clicking "Reload").

It doesn't yet work for non-logged-in users, nor is it a particularly good indicator for the blind or vision-impaired. But I think it's a step up. Hopefully I'll get the IP user indicator working before I leave for sxswi. Otherwise, it'll be some road-coding for me!
