Server hardware upgrade[edit]

The Wikitravel server will be down for about 5 minutes sometime between 5PM and 6PM EDT today for a hardware upgrade (more memory). Sorry for the short notice, but I think the memory will be nice to have. --Evan 16:45, 5 April 2006 (EDT)

The server upgrade is complete, but it looks like I'll need to do a little kernel-parameter magic and reboot later tonight. I'll give a few minutes fair warning. --Evan 17:59, 5 April 2006 (EDT)
OK, no warning, but we rebooted and after a few panicky minutes the server is back up with a big chunk of new RAM. Thanks for your patience, everyone. --Evan 19:08, 5 April 2006 (EDT)
There's been continuing high load over the last 2 hours; I'm tweaking things here and there in order to make things run a little smoother. --Evan 21:28, 5 April 2006 (EDT)
Any idea what's causing the load? The stats say there were almost 900k hits yesterday and the server is very, very slow right now, half my requests are timing out... Jpatokal 23:57, 5 April 2006 (EDT)
I had to upgrade to a 2.6.x kernel to see the new memory, but after rebooting any PHP that ran in Apache went dog slow. After a few hours of trying everything else, I backed out to the older (2.4.x) kernel. And things seem pretty peppy now. I have no idea what's going on, but I'll do some more investigation before upgrading again. --Evan 00:14, 6 April 2006 (EDT)
