Upgrade about to begin[edit]

I've got things ported and ready for an upgrade to 1.5.x. My test upgrade yesterday took about 20 minutes for en:, so I'm most likely just going to shut down the site for about an hour and run the upgrade. --Evan 00:57, 23 Feb 2006 (EST)

This is done and the site is unlocked again. I don't think any of the language versions had more than a few minutes of downtime; seems like that worked pretty well. Thanks for everyone's patience; hopefully we'll have a more responsive, featureful server after this upgrade. --Evan 03:40, 23 February 2006 (EST)

Upgrade notes[edit]

So, the upgrade seems to have gone pretty well. Here are some notes:

  • The cookie for the PHP session has changed; consequently, users will have to logout and log back in again.
  • I've spent the last few days testing Wikitravel extensions against 1.5.x, but I found 3 discrepancies on rolling out to the production site. My guess is that those were not all of the bugs, so please use Wikitravel:Bug reports to note any funny behavior.
  • There may be some new features that I haven't exercised well with testing. Please, if you want to see if a new feature in 1.5.x works on Wikitravel, be gentle, and be prepared to file a bug report if it doesn't!
  • The "donations" and "current events" items may show up in the sidebar for some language versions; this can be fixed by editing "MediaWiki:Sidebar". I'll try to do that for as many versions as I remember.
  • It would be nice if go-betweens would let users of non-English languages know about the upgrade.

Thanks again for the downtime. This particular upgrade was one of the most complicated I've had to do since we started using MediaWiki in July 2003; the change of the database structure was quite radical. However, it's also very good, and should probably serve the software well for the next few years. In other words, I don't think upgrades should take this long in the near future. --Evan 03:56, 23 February 2006 (EST)

Bug report: uploading seems to be disabled? Jpatokal 04:16, 23 February 2006 (EST)
Blech. The configuration setting changed from '$wgDisableUpload = false' to '$wgEnableUpload = true'. Anyways, got it switched. --Evan 04:18, 23 February 2006 (EST)
Also, template defaults like {{{1|default}}} don't seem to work, see [1] for how it should work and [2] / [3] for how it doesn't. (What I'm trying to do is force the default image to come up if the 3rd parameter hasn't been given.) Jpatokal 04:23, 23 February 2006 (EST)
As far as I can tell, template parameter defaults is a MediaWiki 1.6.x feature. (See http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Parameter_default). I'd like to move to 1.6.x sooner rather than later -- not much use tracking Wikimedia releases from this far away -- but I'd also like to let 1.5.6 settle for a little while. --Evan 04:49, 23 February 2006 (EST)
That's odd, I could've sworn this was a 1.5.x feature... but thanks for effort. This will make the templates on ja: super-keen when it actually does work. Jpatokal 06:14, 23 February 2006 (EST)
They will shine like the sun. --Evan 06:17, 23 February 2006 (EST)

One more bug: the text of javascript:toggleTOC() (as seen at the bottom of every table of contents) defaults to the rather unpretty "undefined". Jpatokal 06:30, 23 February 2006 (EST)

The upgrade seems to have purged all updates to the watchlist. It is now showing me only the articles that were updated after midnight. --Ravikiran 07:40, 23 February 2006 (EST)
