Wikitravel:14 February 2005
Another upgrade odyssey at Wikitravel seems to have ended successfully. When we moved from our old servers to Canaca.com, we were inadvertently put on a server that was a poor PHP performer (CGI interface, no Zend or Turck optimization). Canaca offered to move us to a new server, but at the time, it seemed better to stabilize (we'd just had 4 days of downtime). After a couple of months, though, the performance problems were starting to show, so it seemed like a good time to get the move over with.
Editing was disabled 13 Feb 2005 at 1PM EST, followed by an astounding 4-hour backup process (much slower download than anticipated). The Web hosting service missed our handoff Sunday evening EST, and follow-up was poor Monday morning. Once we finally got someone on the phone who understood the problem, the process took the (predicted) two hours.
The IP address for the Wikitravel server has changed, so while that propagates we'll be using the IP address as the main host address. That means you see a blecherous IP address in your address bar rather than pleasant wikitravel.org. I'll change this after 8 hours or so, just to let the name seep out everywhere.
Thanks to all for your patience and support. Hopefully this is the last time we need to change servers for a long while. --Evan 17:45, 14 Feb 2005 (EST)
