[edit] Moral: fix the hole in the roof before it rains
wikitravel.org was down from about 15:00 UTC 13 December until about 6:00 UTC 14 December 2005. Our site had been growing steadily, and we were causing some load problems at our VPS Web hosting service, but they seemed to be correcting themselves. This morning (my time), we had a severe server crash, and the hosting service let me know we had to move to a dedicated server. So, that's what I did today: installed packages and moved all our files and database data to a brilliant new Debian Web server all of our own. Of course, while all this happened, the Web site was off the air.
The site is now active and working. While DNS is propagating some people will see the new IP address in their location bar; that should go away within 24 hours. On the plus side, I was able to install memcached and eaccelerator, so the combination of more hardware and better software should give us a peppier site.
Thanks to everyone for your patience and support. --Evan 00:51, 14 Dec 2005 (EST)
