Wikitravel:10 October 2004
From Wikitravel
So, I was looking over the list of WikiSpam URLs at http://www.chongqed.org/, and the list of BannedContent at CommunityWiki, and I realized that we could probably save ourselves a little bit of work by just blocking edits that contain these regular expressions.
I tried to convince myself that it wasn't really very Wiki to do that, but then I thought that content bans were a lot more open and friendly than user bans. Anyone's welcome to help us out with Wikitravel; they're not welcome to repeatedly drop their links on our pages.
So, I implemented a quick filter based on the CommunityWiki list, and I hooked it up for all the Wikitravel wikis. Most people will probably never realize it's there. I'm worried it's going to backfire, though, and I'm not 100% convinced it's the right thing to do. Discussion and comments welcome. --Evan 22:37, 10 Oct 2004 (EDT)
- I think the most important links to ban are ones repeatedly inserted here. If we have a link repeatedly stuck in, how should we nominate it for banning? -- Colin 23:24, 10 Oct 2004 (EDT)
- If I understand what Evan wrote correctly one would just add the offinding link to the list of BannedContent at CommunityWiki -- Mark 07:01, 11 Oct 2004 (EDT)
- Right now I'm downloading the BannedContent stuff by hand, but I expect to set up a cron job to do it. I'm trying to figure out how to submit them on a page here. If we have a page like Wikitravel:Banned content regexes, it will be hard to save... So, I'm not sure. Suggestions? --Evan 12:29, 11 Oct 2004 (EDT)
- Cool, from a quick smoketest this seems to work really well. Thanks! -- Mark 04:47, 11 Oct 2004 (EDT)
