West Jefferson is in Ashe County, in the North Carolina Mountains.[1] Zip code in 28694 West Jefferson is loaded with things to see and do. Our most popular attractions include the only cheese plant in North Carolina, with a viewing room where you can see the cheese being made as well as the ever popular St. Mary’s Episcopal Church containing 3 of Ben Long’s frescos. West Jefferson has a bustling downtown Arts District with lots of art galleries and studios featuring local and regional artists’. Throughout the summer and again at the holiday season, the famed Gallery Crawls are an opportunity for folks to stroll the streets of downtown and visit the many galleries and meet the artists in a casual open house event. The Ashe County Arts Council showcases local artists’ work with rotating exhibits and special events throughout the year. Also, West Jefferson is the site of 15+ murals that create a walking tour throughout downtown reflecting the area’s history and unique mountain character. And don’t miss all the painted fire hydrants and pedestals scattered around town.

Get in[edit]

Access is primarily by private vehicle. Fly to Charlotte (CLT), Raleigh (RDU), Asheville (AVL), or Greensboro (GSO). From Charlotte, take I-77 north to US-421 and then take US 221 to West Jefferson. From Raleigh, take I-40 west to Greensboro, then US-421 then US 221 to West Jefferson.

Get around[edit]

The downtown area is very compact and easily walkable. The remainder of town is well provided with sidewalks and some bike lanes, making non-automotive transportation a reasonable idea.

See[edit][add listing]

  • Blue Ridge Parkway. The parkway crosses hwy 421 east of Boone and hwy 321 to the south of Boone. If you head south on 321toward Blowing Rock you'll soon come upon it.  edit
  • Howard's Knob. This is a short drive up the mountain and a great experience as it affords the most commanding view of all of downtown Boone. As you are riding in on either hwy 421 or hwy 321 you will not be able to miss the huge mountain sticking up out of the surrounding landscape. Howard's Knob park is up at the very top and it's easy to get to, you just have to know which road to turn onto off of King St. Heading west on 421, you will turn right onto Cherry St. Keep heading uphill and when you come to an intersection go in the direction that looks like it's leading uphill and before you know it you will come upon the park.  edit
