Wasilla

Wasilla is a city in Alaska. It is most famous as the hometown of Alaska Governor and 2008 Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin. She served as mayor of the city for six years. Wasilla is the last city of significant size on the Parks Highway northward; therefore, it is a frequent stopping point if traveling by car to Denali National Park, Fairbanks or other points north.

Iceskating: From late October to early april the Wasilla area boasts what is likely the largest concentration of outdoor iceskating in the new world. A huge variety of locations including the hayflats, big lake, finger/cottonwood/Wasilla/Lucille lakes, Matanuska river, and so forth provide trips as long as 30 miles or more. Its easiest to find good ice in November and late march. There are also 2 indoor ice arenas, Brett memorial, and menard sports center.

Hiking The Wasilla area has a huge quantity and variety of trails to hike. Popular trails in order of difficulty/distance include kepler Bradley, Butte, Marmot mountain, hatch peak, lazy mountain, government peak, Matanuska peak, pioneer peak.

Wasilla has several branches of chain stores for buying food, clothes and outdoor supplies, dominated by a huge Fred Meyer superstore. If you are going north and forgot to bring something important with you or buy it in Anchorage, you should be able to find it in Wasilla.
