[edit] Understand
The area is the southern part of the historic region of East Prussia, a former German kingdom. In modern history, it first became a part of Poland in 1945, when German East Prussia was split into Lithuanian (Klaipeda), Russian (Kaliningrad Oblast), and Polish parts as the spoils of war. It is known for its numerous beautiful lakes.
