Växjö [1] is the largest city in Kronobergs län in the region Småland in Sweden. The municipality has a population of about 78,000 (2006).

There are direct trains from Copenhagen Airport (Kastrup) in Denmark. Furthermore, there are trains from Malmö, Gothenburg and Stockholm (change in Alvesta). There is also an airport in the vicinity with flights from Stockholm, Kalmar, Duesseldorf, Berlin and Kaunas in Lithuania.

Växjö is a small town, so your feet will be sufficient for the center of town. The rest of the city can be reached by bicycle or bus. City buses as well as buses to the country side can be found at the railway station. Buses are operated by Länstrafiken.

  • The house of Emigrants (Utvandrarnas hus) [2] - A museum about the 1.2 million Swedish who moved to America in the 19th and 20th century.
  • Växjö Cathedral (Växjö domkyrka) [3] was built in the 12th century. It has two large spires and an interior filled with glass from Kosta Boda and other Swedish glass makers that are located near the town.
  • The Swedish Glass Museum (Smålands Museum) [4].
  • Teleborg castle is located in the university area. It looks old but was in fact built in 1900.
  • The Echo Temple is a water tower with acoustics making sounds echo several times. Located near the university area in Teleborg.

There is a Swedish army surplus store not too far from the city center.

There are lots of shopping opportunities in the main street Storgatan. Nothing that you can't buy everywhere else in Sweden though.

  • PM & Vänner at Storgatan 24. One of Sweden's best restaurants and the best wine list according to The White Guide.
  • Fru T on Bäckaslövsvägen 2 south of the city centre. Small restaurant with good Swedish food.
  • Koh-thai [5] at Västra Esplanaden 6. Thai restaurant with excellent food. Serves lunch for 65 SEK even on Saturdays.
  • Royal Thai Restaurant at Norra Järnvägsgatan 10. Thai, chinese and japanese food. Somewhat nonchalant service.
  • Golden Farao at Norra Esplanaden 32 A. Egyptian restaurant with excellent cheap food and generous opening hours every day of the week. Vegetarian menu available.
  • Akropolis at Norra Järnvägsgatan (next to the train station). A Greek restaurant with the best lunch buffét in town.

  • Kronoberg castle ruin is located a bit north of the city. It is a place with beautiful Swedish nature, tourists and a cozy but relatively expensive café. A local bus goes to the castle in the summertime. The castle dates back to 14th century, and figured in both the Danish-Swedish wars and as base of operations for the Geatish [6] freedomfighter, Nils Dacke [7], who fought against the Swedish crown in the 16th century.

  • Åsnen runt [8] is a 4 day bicycle route that goes through Växjö and round the lake Åsnen some 20 km south of town.
