Valley City [1] is the seat of Barnes County, in the east central area of North Dakota. It has a population of about 6,826 people. Coordinates are latitude 46.92 N, longitude 98.00 W. Its elevation is 1,222 feet.

Valley City sits on the banks of the winding Sheyenne River. During its history, it was known under several names, including Second Crossing, Fifth Siding, Wahpeton, and Worthington. It is the home of Valley City State University.

• Fishing on Lake Ashtabula, about 14 miles northwest of Valley City (walleye, northern pike, white bass, yellow perch and black bullheads).

• Sheyenne River Valley Scenic Byway, map is a 63 mile scenic drive and hike along the Sheyenne River Valley, that stretches from Baldhill Dam to Lisbon. The trail follows historic Native American foot paths and pioneer wagon trails. The byway is available for snowmobiling, cross-country or downhill skiing in the winter and fishing, hiking, biking or canoeing in the spring, summer and fall. The "Fall Color Drive" along the route is considered one of the most spectacular autumnal shows.
