Hello! Welcome to Wikitravel. To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page. However, even more important than following every guideline is to PLUNGE FORWARD and write something – someone will be along to help with the formatting later! Add your hometown, or a place you’ve visited often!

It is also a good idea to create your own account on Wikitravel because it will give you various benefits:

  1. Ability to communicate with other writers about your edits and travel tips
  2. Ability to turn off advertising in your Account Settings
  3. Credit for your travel writing/edits, which will be attributed to you rather than just an IP address
  4. Your contributions will be more trusted as you become familiar to other Wikitravelers

If you need help, check out Wikitravel:Help, or post a message in the travellers' pub. We are looking forward to seeing you on Wikitravel! -- IBAlex

Kathmandu[edit]

Hi, thanks for your recent contributions on the Kathmandu article. I noticed that some of the content was not original, which I have reverted. There still is more to be checked but please keep in mind that content on Wikitravel needs to be original. Also if you have been adding content on other websites yourself, whatever you are writing on Wikitravel needs to be worded differently. Please review your latest edits, to avoid that more text will be reverted. We appreciate your efforts, any questions, let us know! Kind regards, Adzas (talk) 12:36, 20 May 2014 (EDT)

Thank you for your message on my talk page. The text that was removed yesterday came up as copied content from other sources, as there were so many changes made not everything has been checked yet, and if you were just moving text around that was already there before, then it may have looked as if you added that text. No worries, we are checking the article completely and will make adjustments if needed. We appreciate your efforts! Kind regards, Adzas (talk) 05:10, 21 May 2014 (EDT)

Vilnius[edit]

Hello, glad someone properly edited the city i live in. May i slightly edit some of your edits (some ~5 places) or there is a certain reason for everything? It all seems well thought out, and some things you have changed now were previously well thought out too, but maybe there is some reason to leave some (ie those) inaccuracies. Eg for the sake of simplicity or so. Or don't you care? --Local (talk) 13:41, 24 June 2014 (EDT)

OK SURE

I saw your question posted on usertalk:local and I wanted to provide a helpful guide for providing external links: External_links --Tyen (talk) 17:39, 30 June 2014 (EDT)

Tysons Corner[edit]

Thanks for the heads up, while some of the content appeared to be suspect, it all checked out as original. Tysons Corner's history as a mall and shopping center make it appear as spam or business touting, but it's not. Also, our edit history predates duplicate content on other sites. We appreciate you looking out! IBcaldera (talk) 16:01, 7 August 2014 (EDT)

Ko Lipe[edit]

Thank you for contributing again and again! The guide gets better because of editors like you! Appreciated!

Cleveland & Belgrade[edit]

Thank you for re-arranging the Cleveland and Belgrade articles. It looks like you are moving information to the various district articles, and in the Belgrade article moving and updating information, which is great. Just when you do so please leave a message in the summary field to explain what you did. When such large amounts of text are removed or added the system flags it as possible spam/vandalism, so it would be a shame if your work is reverted because of this. As far as I can see all is good though, so keep up the great work! Adzas (talk) 16:20, 13 September 2014 (EDT)

Tehran[edit]

Hi, thank you for re-arranging Tehran and adding information to it. Great job. We'd love to see more of your valuable contributions! Cheers! --Binbin (talk) 06:17, 21 October 2014 (EDT)

MoS[edit]

Thanks for updating and trimming our Hong Kong article.

Might I trouble you not to change Hong Kong English spellings to US spelling, though?

The other thing you might want to pay attention to is that we use a simple dollar sign ($), and NOT "HK$" in ALL Hong Kong articles - see our currency guidelines for more detail. Any place a simple dollar sign ($) is ambiguous then please use the ISO symbolisation of HKD. --Ttcf (talk) 23:04, 27 October 2014 (EDT)

Unattributed copying from other travel sites[edit]

Please do not copy material from other travel sites to here without adequate (and legally required) attribution as you did with our Hong Kong and Iran articles. --Ttcf (talk) 21:41, 31 October 2014 (EDT)

What do I have to do, credit myself for the work? It is on the common license......
You may wish to respond at the Pub... --Ttcf (talk) 00:40, 1 November 2014 (EDT)
The CC-by-SA license allows copying with attribution so in general you can copy text from WT to the other wiki or from either to a third site, a book, or wherever provided you attribute the authors. However, Wikitravel:Internet Brands block any mention of the other wiki here so it is impossible to provide proper attribution for copies from the other wiki to this site; most such copying would therefore be a violation of the license and of copyright law.
I think there is an exception if the material copied is entirely your own work. In that case, you own the copyright so it seems to me you can put copies wherever you please. However, if you wrote it on the other wiki then it could be argued that their license applies and you cannot copy it here. Pashley (talk) 11:03, 1 November 2014 (EDT)
Thanks for that more complete explanation, Pashley, and apologies to the IP if you seem to have walked unknowingly into a bit of a minefield. I'd still encourage you to register an account(s) and continue contributing. --Ttcf (talk) 15:25, 1 November 2014 (EDT)

If the work is his own, no attribution is required. Other than that, we do not *accept* contributions that are copied from 3rd party sites, so again, we do not require attribution -- you're simply not allowed to do it. This user's own writing is exempt.IBobi (talk) 21:28, 5 November 2014 (EST)
