[edit] Phuket trip (July 28-31, 2007)
Just came back from beautiful Phuket, after a 4D3N trip there together with my gf... The flight was via the ever-affordable AirAsia and a model aircraft actually came back with me as a sign of loyalty! We stayed at the excellent all-suite Kamala Bay Garden Resort which was just a stone's throw away from the interesting FantaSea cultural theme park and also just 15 minutes ride from Patong (by tuk-tuk)...
Speaking of Patong, the place has recovered almost 100% from the devastating 2004 tsunami, in fact, it was as if nothing happened and the place is still as bustling and happening as ever! Bangla Road remains the ever popular nightspot with its "lady boys" and local gals all over the place enticing visitors (particularly the "Mat Salleh" caucacians!) to drop by their respective nightspots... The Jungceylon Shopping Mall is a welcome addition to the Patong scene, in fact, the typical "Phuket" tees sold there are WAY cheaper than those on Thaveewong Beach Road (100B as compared with 200B on Beach Rd., that even after bargaining!)...
Phi Phi was, as mentioned in many travel guides, as superb as it is, considering the place also suffered significant damage from the tsunami... The popularity of the Islands is evident from the fact that the tourists far outnumbered the locals in the main town at Ton Sai Bay (Phi Phi Don, to be exact)... Too bad we only stayed for an hour there for lunch and shopping, but there will almost certainly be a second trip to this beautiful diving spot!
Also, we paid a visit to the Wat Chalong, the biggest Buddhist temple on Phuket, located at Chalong Bay (the place where boats depart for the Similans, Phi Phi, and James Bond Island)... The complex was huge, with several large buildings including the main stupa... It was quite crowded with people, considering there was no major Buddhist celebration on that day and not forgetting that July is the low season in Phuket...
