We love Marrakech - so much that we bought an ancient townhouse in the old city, medina, and had it completely renovated. We used local artisans who are skilled at re-creating wonderful Moorish architecture - arches; beautiful sculpted plaster; smooth waterproof tadelakt for walls and floors, even our small pool; hand-carved wood; decorative and useful grillwork; a stunning dome. The result is a space we love being in - bright, calming - a real blessing to come back to after the busyness and colours of the outside. Here in a zen-like setting, you can relax and enjoy the serene atmosphere with your own personal bit of blue sky above the open central courtyard. We are English-Canadians who travel a lot, love living in different parts of the world and absorbing new cultures. Marrakech just fit the bill for us - and having that wonderful architecture and interior decoration was the icing on the cake. We intended our newly-acquired townhouse (dar/riad) to be for family and friends but it soon became a place we operated as a small boutique hotel / bed & breakfast. We liked it all so much, we opened a second riad, Riad Chi-Chi, with my twin sister - being identical twins, both riads have very similar interior decoration -- in fresh soothing white with the odd splashes of colour creating a calming effect.
