I am often asked "When am I in Northern Ontario?", or "Where does Northern Ontario start?". For many city folk ie. GTA, the perception of heading north past Highway 7 is in fact Northern Ontario..........at least in their minds. Perception can be everything in terms of defining and naming personal spaces such as northern Ontario as opposed to Southern Ontario. Why for example, would the "Bruce Peninsula be included in something called Southwestern Ontario when the Province of Ontario describes Ontario Travel destinations.

[edit] Torontonian's Perception of Northern Ontario

From anecdotal evidence, every Torontonian alive (If they could visualize the location) would say The Bruce Peninsula is North. North of what? Well north and within their own definition this could be northern Ontario........for sure it is North of Toronto.

Politically designated boundaries often confuse, and impact on travelers perception of the destination they will be going to. Is Ottawa in Eastern Ontario, or North Eastern Ontario, or simply North of Toronto. I would probably say North East of Toronto. What about Kingston and the 1000 Islands, are you in Eastern Ontario, or are north east of Toronto, or could this be for some Northern Ontario?? Barrie Ontario for example has been promoted as the fastest growing city in Southern Ontario. Again for many GTA residents, Barrie is in their minds, northern Ontario, for sure it is north of Toronto.
