Hi Evan. This looks to be a great site. I picked it up through the link from Lessig's blog (I think. Hard to remember where some of those links come from...) I was already pretty familiar with copyleft and Creative Commons. I'd looked at Wikipedia quite a bit. Several of my students have started to use it as a reference for writing assignments. I'd never tried editing a page before, and was pleasantly surprised by how easy it is. I hadn't read the plunge forward, but just went to work on some typos. The style manual is clear enough, and then the templates got me started on new articles. All very easy.
This is good news! I'd been considering using wiki in some form with writing students, perhaps having them write articles for Wikipedia on Japanese cultural items. The syntax is quite simple, so I'm sure they can handle it with a little help. Wikitravel will suit my purposes even better. I expect to enlist my students to write about the Tokyo area starting in April. I will be teaching an English seminar in which students will research and write about Tokyo in English. We'll see how much relevant material they come up with, and then post it. It may get a bit chaotic, so I may use a [moodle] to thrash out the basics first. --ted 08:21, 30 Jan 2004 (JST)

Sorry, er... your welcome? Yes, I've introduced a few students to Wikitravel. I hope they haven't been too disruptive. I'm still trying to work through with them what Wikitravel can do at the same time as we just get started. I guess it is a class-sized "plunge forward". The results have been a bit mixed so far. I described the class to them last semester, but few students really want to do any writing, and I think they are tiring of Tokyo. Some of them anyway. On the other hand, in class last week, they began to see some of the possibilities. I really didn't mean to pawn the re-writing off on the rest of Wikitravel, but corrections, but even better- extensions, from you and Paul have been highly instructive. I've been trying to keep tabs on what they are doing after a big copyright violation from one student last semester, but it sometimes takes me a couple of days to get to my Watchlist. Also, if they make changes without logging in, I might miss them.
They are all in an elective English writing course, which makes it kind of hard for me to encourage them to join the Japanese Expedition. I'm sure they would get a kick out of correcting someone else for a change, but I think I need to hold off a couple weeks before mentioning it as their teacher. I'm supposed to help them write in English! Term ends in December, so I'll talk about it a bit before then. Of course, if someone who was not their English teacher left them a message on their pages, I'm sure they would appreciate it! I see you left a note for Atsuko, but you might have better luck with a few of the others listed on my user page.

Evan, it took me far longer than I expected to bring some students to Wikitravel. I've also introduced them to contributing to Wikipedia. Many of them know Wikipedia as readers: it has become a popular source for plagiarism information at many unis here in Japan. Even though some students had read Wikipedia, they had no idea that they could actually create it themselves. I think they often arrived directly at pages through web searches.
On balance, I hope that bringing these people into Wikitravel will be a plus. Just getting the idea of wiki into their hands is a good start and opens some new ideas about reading, writing, cooperation, and creativity. I hope a few will join the nascent Japanese Expedition later. In the short term I hope any growing pains, like copyright violation, are not too troublesome. Ted 23:43, 30 Oct 2004 (EDT)
