Upper Falls (West Virginia)

Upper Falls [1] is an unincorporated populated place in Kanawha County, West Virginia. Discovered by John Peter Salley in 1742, the community had a population of 1,254 residents in the 2000 Census.

Access is provided by four public highways into the center of the community. Kanawha County Route 3, known as Coal River Road, approaches from the city of Saint Albans to the north and becomes Kanawha County Route 9/1 as it continues southward to the community of Alum Creek. Upper Falls Road, which is Kanawha County Route 9 and then Kanawha County Route 12, provides access from the city of South Charleston to the east. Kanawha County Route 3, named Falls Creek Road, leads to the community of Garretts Bend to the west.

Upper Falls of Coal River [2], which gives the community its name, bisects it and is a popular scenic attraction.
Meadowood Park (416 Upper Falls Road) borders the falls along the river's eastern bank and is relatively new and still under development. Planned improvements include a boat launch and river portage facility.

Big Bend Golf Course (150 Riverview Drive) is a par-17 championship public course that lies alongside the Coal River, providing challenging play at a very reasonable cost.
Honeysuckle Farm (366 Thomas Hollow Road) offers equestrian activities on rustic trails and in a 200 foot indoor riding arena.
Mountaineer Radio Control Flying Club (354 Upper Falls Road) maintains a flying field that is very busy on summer weekends.
