The United States has an extensive series of national parks [1], monuments, historic sites, shorelines, and scenic trails that protect natural and cultural sites throughout the country.

Most national monuments and all national parks are units of the United States National Park Service (NPS) and are shown on the accompanying NPS maps. A few monuments and preserves do not appear on the maps, as they are instead managed by other government agencies. These are indicated in the listings below.

  • ABMC -- American Battle Monuments Commission
  • BLM -- Bureau of Land Management
  • BR -- Bureau of Reclamation
  • DOD ARMY -- U.S. Army
  • NOAA -- National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
  • USDA FS -- National Forest Service
  • USFWS -- Fish & Wildlife Service

As of 2007, the "National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass" [2] sold by the NPS for $80 ($10 for seniors over 62) allows free entrance to almost all sites managed by the Parks Service, the Forest Service, the Fish and Wildlife Service, the Bureau of Land Management, and the Bureau of Reclamation, though additional fees for tours, camping, and other services may be charged.
