Turangi [1] is a town at the south end of Lake Taupo, in the Central North Island of New Zealand.

Turangi is a small town in the central North Island. It is situated on Highway 1 at the Southern End of lake Taupo. Turangi is home of the famous Tongariro River which feeds the Great Lake Taupo and can be accessed by private car or bus.

By car[edit]

Turangi is the heart of the central north island with Auckland's and Wellington's central being almost the same driving times. Approximate driving times are as follows: Auckland Central - 4 hours Hamilton - 2 hours and 34 minutes Rotorua - 1 hour and 38 minutes Napier - 2 hours and 18 minutes New Plymouth - 3 hours and 12 minutes Wanganui - 2 hours and 11 minutes Palmerston North - 2 hours and 25 minutes Wellington Central 4 hours and 7 minutes

By Bus[edit]

Intercity and Nakedbus offer coach services to Turangi several times a day from throughout the North Island. Adventure travel networks in the form of Kiwi Experience, Magic Bus and Stray also visit Turangi

Turangi is very compact and it is easy to walk to our motels, backpackers, restaurants, walking tracks, river, town centre, supermarket, information centre and library. We do have our lovely Tokaanu Thermal area just 6ks from town, along with the Tongariro National Park on the other side of the hill and some great mountain bike/walking tracks on the desert road, all of which require transport to get too. Turangi has car rentals available at Turangi Rentals and Turangi Auto Centre, a shuttle/taxi service with Turangi Alpine shuttles along with mountain bike hire at Tongariro River Rafting for you to explore our beautiful and unique surrounding area.

There are many sights of interest in Turangi, most of which are free of charge, and you should set a day or two aside to check out the sights.To get around the sights transport is a must - a mountain bike at the very least for people with some fitness or perhaps a rental car or shuttle for those who prefer to relax while on holiday.

  • Tongariro National Trout Centre- The only kind in NZ with a fresh water aquarium displaying New Zealand's native and exotic fish. Only 2ks south of Turangi the Tongariro National Trout Centre would be a worthwhile trip. Learn about the management of the Taupo Fishery, also see some lovely rainbow trout in the viewing chamber, popular children's fishing days are held through out the year and a lovely river walk and picnic area is also available. A small fee of $10.00 per adult will be charged however children are free.
  • Cultural Sites- Explore history at cultural sites close to Turangi, including the redoubt Te Porere, an ancient settlement at Opataka, and Rotoaira home of the famous Haka. Learn more about the culture of the region on an indigenously inspired guided walking encounter
  • Tokaanu Thermal Area- Enjoy an easy stroll around the Tokaanu thermal walk and witness the natural wonders of the geothermal area for free. Remember to stick to the track and closely supervise children. The adjacent thermal got pools are great for a relaxing and therapeutic soak after a day exploring the region's attractions.
  • Volcanic Touring Loop- For an easy half day activity take a drive from Turangi around the volcanic loop. This journey takes in the spectacular volcanic landscapes of the dual World Heritage Tongariro National Park and stunning views of its mountains - Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu.
  • Tongariro River- Turangi has some fantastic walking/mountain tracks close to town, the track features some amazing views of the mighty Tongariro River which has made Turangi famous for its Trout Fishing. There are places you can take a dip if your keen and children like to tube in parts of the river.
  • Wharf/Lake- Just a short drive from Turangi you can visit the historical wharf in Tokaanu. You can see some magnificent views of Lake Taupo and the historical Waihi village. Take a picnic or dinner and relax in the peaceful surroundings or take a dip in the clear waters of Lake Taupo
  • Bird Watching- Turangi is known for its Blue Duck project, a native bird who's species was declining to concerning numbers. However with the support of DOC and local business the Blue Duck numbers are increasing and sometimes pairs can been seen from the Major Jones swing bridge in Turangi. Turangi is also surrounded with walks featuring native bush that home a lot of bird species. The Pukawa, Kuratau/Omori area have also done a lot of work to increase their bird population and are proud of their achievements.

Turangi is mostly famous for the river that runs through it "The Tongariro River" and is world renown for it's trout fishing, however Turangi is fast growing to be the ideal destination to do the famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing, mountain biking, rafting, kayaking, skiing and hunting.

  • Trout Fishing

Trout Fishing is a popular sport that brings a lot of visitors to the area especially during August-October when the run is on. You must purchase a Lake Taupo fishing licence to fish in our area and fishing is available on the River (fly fishing only) and Lake. If you are not experience Turangi host a range of guides that can take you out on the river or lake and if you are lucky enough to catch a trout many of the local restaurants will cook it up for you to dine on (at a small cost).
