Turangi is mostly famous for the river that runs through it: the Tongariro River. This river provides some excellent trout fishing all year round (but particularly during August - October) for Rainbow (steelhead) and Brown trout. Turangi is also convenient as a base for exploring the Volcanic Plateau or partaking in outdoor pursuits such as hunting, walking, climbing and skiing in season.
