Tonina is an ancient maya city near Ocosingo in Chiapas. In it's day it rivaled Palenque in power. Only recently discovered in the last 30 years it provides a great opportunity to see an ancient maya ruin without being overcrowded with tourists.
All descriptions on the ruins and in the museum are written in Spanish.
Take a colectivo from the Ocosingo market ($1 USD).
The ruins close at 4:45pm, so plan this with your arrival. Take a colectivo back to the Ocosingo market ($1 USD). It's possible to catch a colectivo at 5pm and probably later as well (10/2014).
Tickets cost 46.60 pesos (10/2014).
There are a few restaurants near the ruins, for better options, head back to Ocosingo.
There are several acceptable hotels in Ocosingo on the main plaze. The best seems to be Hotel Central.
