Toniná

Tonina is an ancient maya city near Ocosingo in Chiapas. In it's day it rivaled Palenque in power. Only recently discovered in the last 30 years it provides a great opportunity to see an ancient maya ruin without being overcrowded with tourists. Get in Tonina viewed from the main plaza Take a colectivo from the Ocosingo market ($1 USD). See Tonina is one of 3 great Maya cities in Chiapas. Tonina was the primary rival of Palenque. Do Hike the ruins Visit the museum (quite nicely done) Eat There are a few restaurants near the ruins, for better options, head back to Ocosingo.
