Thies (pronounced: "chess") (French:Thiès) is the capital of the Thies administrative region and the third largest city in Senegal.
Thies does not have much to attract the visitor but it is not a bad place. Staying there when by waiting on a visa or something in Dakar is far more pleasant that Dakar itself. Thies is much more relaxed. There are no real attractions other than a large market.
Taxis are plentiful and most rides will cost you 500CFA. If you're going from the center to the gare routiere in the southern part of the city, 600CFA is not unreasonable.
Like much of Senegal, touristy restaurants are surprisingly expensive. There are apparently none being particularly good. Local restaurants serve the standard dish of Jolof rice, fish and vegetables for a reasonable price.
There are a few fun local bars. Two facing each other are called Le Palais and Le Paradis. The later attempts more of a lounge feel whereas the former is spit 'n' sawdust, but does show football. Drinks are cheap, plenty of people will talk to you, you will be bothered by prostitutes but if you make clear you are not buying this will not last long.
The cheapest place to stay is the Medical Centre - "Region Medicale" - which will give you a basic room for 5000 per night. It is also a good place to stay because when you tell people you stay there they will assume you are a doctor and will respect you.
