Tanchangya phrasebook

The Tanchangya people are an indigenous people in southeastern Bangladesh. There are 13 indigenous ethnic communities living in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) among the 45 ethnic communities in Bangladesh. ‘Tanchangya’ is the one of them. Moreover, Tanchangya people also living in North-Eastern India in Mizoram and Tripura in India, and in Rakhine state Chin state and Yangon in Myanmar.

The word “Tong” means Hill and “Taungya” means Jhum (Hilltop Sweden cultivation). Therefore, the word Tanchangya means Hill Sweden farmer. Moreover, the root meaning of “Taung” is mountain in Burmese and “Chaung” indicates “valley” and because the Tanchangya living in the valley thus, they got the name “Taung+chaungya+ya” from Rakhine state in western part of Myanmar bordering with south-east Bangladesh.
