Talk:San Juan County (Washington)

From Wikitravel
Jump to: navigation, search

I'm not a Washington expert, but is there a significant difference between this county and the San Juan Islands? Aren't they pretty much coextensive? --Evan 11:35, 21 July 2006 (EDT)

I live in Vancouver and have family in the San Juan Islands. Evan, your hunch is right. For travel guide purposes, I think San Juan County isn't a very useful article, and whatever content is here could be better off in the San Juan Islands article. I'm going to move content across. I also propose turning the this (County) article into a redirect to San Juan Islands. JimDeLaHunt 17:38, 27 May 2007 (EDT)
A perfectly sensible proposal. Plunge forward. - Todd VerBeek 17:56, 27 May 2007 (EDT)
My complaint is that San Juan Island are a geographical feature within the state of Washington while San Juan County is a political location and so san juan island should redirect to san juan county sine the hierarchy of washington (state) goes as follows: regions, then political location with in the region (example is olympic peninsula subdivides into Clallam county and jefferson county and then into Port Angeles, a city in Clallam county. Your point is valid, the Washington State articles are presently organised on county lines. On the other hand, I'm not a big fan of using counties as subregions for Wikitravel. We want to serve travellers, and county boundaries aren't all that meaningful to travellers (see Talk:Washington (state). We should have regions and subregions based on travel logic. By that logic the San Juan Islands are a top-level region of Washington, and I don't think San Juan County per se is very interesting at all. Your thoughts? JimDeLaHunt 03:05, 28 May 2007 (EDT)
I understand where you are coming from and all I am doing is raising the point that we currently have a setup that is in place and until we agree to change that setup (for the rest of the state), then it needs to stay with region then county. I would much rather see SJ County under a SJI region than under Puget Sound where it is right now. Celticevergreen 03:14, 28 May 2007 (EDT)
Fair enough, let's continue this discussion in Talk:Washington (state). JimDeLaHunt 15:03, 28 May 2007 (EDT)

Per Talk:Washington (state)#Proposal to eliminate counties from hierarchy, I've moved the content out of this article to the San Juan Islands region article, and made this a redirect to there. JimDeLaHunt 16:29, 9 June 2007 (EDT)
