Excellent! Unfortunately the original map has its fair share of problems, not replicated here, and I have no editing tool for fixing them... or any better map to reference on the Web. Ah yes.... so to be quite exact, the order on the beach is Coral View, Paradise, Perhentian Cafe, Watercolours, Mama's all in tight succession. Maybe you could also add a little trail separating Mama's and Cocohut to show that these are separate beaches? Jpatokal 22:37, 31 Aug 2004 (EDT)

As a whole, the map (and article) are also tilted towards the western beaches of Besar, because that's where I've spent the most time — but in reality Kecil is the busier and more full-featured of the two. Really while we are at it we should probably weed out some stuff on Besar. Things are too close together. Maybe you could just mention that both beaches are lined with places to stay, and then list the highlights. Believe it or not some of the Arrondissements of Paris have the same exact problem. What is it? You mention it a couple of times, as a way of locating places from the listings, but there's no explaination of what it is in "getting around" or anywhere else. I'm guessing it's the path that goes across Kecil, right? -- Mark 05:13, 1 Sep 2004 (EDT)

Actually, it is right there in Sleep: Pasir Panjang (Long Beach). Most places in the Ps have both Malay and English names, which doesn't make getting around any easier... I've added a little table. Jpatokal 05:51, 1 Sep 2004 (EDT)

OK, so I've done some anal-retentive Wikitravel:Manual of style editing of the listings. Mainly I split up the description from situations where the title of the listing was used as the first word of the sentence, which is sort of a big no-no. The result has less flow, perhaps, but we gain a lot in having the data structured.

I've also tried to add "addresses" where they were missing. These could probably stand some correction. I've also put in a couple of questions in HTML comments.

As for the front-listed link thing, they are butt-ugly that way, so I changed them to the numbered links which appears to be where the consensus is headed, even though the MOS still calls for bare-linked listings at the end. I'm thinking that these will automatically turn into icons when we upgrade right?

So anyhow, I hate doing this stuff. I feel dirty now. But this is the DOM, so the listings really need to reflect the MOS. -- Mark 07:58, 2 Sep 2004 (EDT)

Grr. But I resisted the temptation to revert and instead cleaned up your cleanups; for example, the self-proclaimed Perhentian Cafe is really not the kind of place that needs an accent on the "é"! But where did you get the info regarding the New Cozy Chalets? Google finds nothing and it certainly wasn't there the last time around (early July) when I walked the length of the west coast. It was on that map you pointed me to. It said "New Cozy". If the Cozy is really abandoned, then we should de-list it. As for the acute accent on café, that's how the word is spelled, even in English. -- Mark 08:20, 2 Sep 2004 (EDT)

Somebody else did that (Nils?). I'll leave it even though the MOS calls for the headings to stand on their own outside of the sentences. Meanwhile, you really need to either flesh out or weed out the three "identical" chalet providers. If they really are identical maybe you could do something like this:

Mama's. Near the south end of the main beach on Besar. The southernmost in a string of nearly identical string of Chalet operators, Mama's provides basice non-air-conditioned Chalets for 60-80 RM.

That way we can declutter the map a bit and make the icons bigger. Meanwhile listings with very little description text look pretty bad, so from a typesetting and graphic design point of view we really need to pad them out a bit, so please if you can remember anything else about those places write it, otherwise let's de-list them. This is DOM so it really has to look good. Thanks! -- Mark

Did this article really need to move? There was a redirect from here to Perhentian Islands and the Wikitravel:Article naming conventions would seem to favor the "island" over "pulau" -- heck, I called them "perhentian islands" when I was there. Anyone know which is the best place to get a boat from: Kota Bharu or Kuala Terengganu?

In terms of speed it sounds like Kota Bharu is recommended, because you don't get a boat from Kota Bharu or Kuala Terengganu. You get a boat from Kuala Besut which is slightly closer to Kota Bharu Airport: http://www.backpackjoe.com/GettingAround/tabid/56/Default.aspx

There was a direct ferry from Kota Bharu a few years back but it was discontinued; I've not heard of it being started up again.

Ferries used to go from both Kuala Besut and Tok Bali; the article suggests the latter has now closed. I've used both (although the last time was about 3 years ago) and would recommend Kuala Besut. Both are inbetween Kota Bharu and Kuala Terengganu and can be accessed from either. Kota Bharu is much nearer and there's a direct local bus, plus frequent share taxis from there. From Kuala Terengganu you can take a Kota Bharu bus and get off at Jerteh, and then continue to Kuala Besut by local bus or taxi / share taxi. Tok Bali is nearer to Kota Bharu than Kuala Besut, but it's a shorter and quicker crossing from Kuala Besut (so longer drive, shorter crossing, quicker overall). No matter what, DO NOT buy a return ticket; don't buy your boat ticket back until you're ready to leave.
