I might be Eurocentric here, but the names get to me all the time, how about Far Northeast and Far Southeast instead? --Stefan (sertmann) talk 14:09, 30 December 2009 (EST)

Because then we'd have to disambiguate them? Or do you mean Far Northeastern Russia & Far Southeastern Russia? Now, changing Far Eastern Russia -> Russian Far East would be a clear change for the better, though. --Peter Talk 14:22, 30 December 2009 (EST)
Hmmm, well, that would work too - how about dropping those three subregions and merging Kamchatka and Koryakia into Kamchatka Krai in line with the official 2007 merger. That would put us at nine regions per Wikipedia. The less subregions the better if you ask me, they rarely attract much contribution. --Stefan (sertmann) talk 14:35, 30 December 2009 (EST)
I'm fine with doing that. I'd also like to finally split up Sakhalin Oblast into Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands, and amend the map accordingly. --Peter Talk 14:46, 30 December 2009 (EST)
Makes sense to me too, but that would out us at 10 regions (not that I mind so much, but we would be breaking our own guidelines)...unless we dropped the Oblast from Amur, and made an Amur region from Amur oblast and the J.A.O., The interesting parts of the 'jewishness' is probably as feasible in the Birobidzhan guide, and looking past the 2% jews and some interesting history, it does seem like a pretty natural grouping? --Stefan (sertmann) talk 15:25, 30 December 2009 (EST)
I think it's perfectly fine to have more than nine regions in a breakdown (or less than five). It's often more or less unavoidable mathematically within a complex hierarchy, and it never makes sense to force it. (Try navigating from North America to Dawson County (Georgia) to get a good sense of why.) --Peter Talk 21:01, 30 December 2009 (EST)
