I removed a gratuitous comment to Slavonic University as better than American University. First, it's obviously a undocumented opinion; second, if you read the newspaper stories on corruption in central asian schools, American University is widely regarded as the most legitimate degree you can get in the region.

Totally agree about the Slavonic University, I've spoken to locals who say they can afford the tuition there, but not the bribes. The part about trusting the police is dead on, they will try to take money from you if they sense one ounce of vulnerability.

The part about STDs I don't know if I agree with, prostitution is widespread, but not like I've seen in other cities and AIDS is almost non-exsistant here, something like less than 1,000 people and mostly in the south. Either way definitely wrap up with locals.

I disagree that travel to Bishkek should be avoided at this time. It would be more appropriate to exercise caution, but there is no threat to foreigners.
