Ta'izz is a city in the South of the Yemeni Mountains and is one of the safest and most cosmopolitan centres in Yemen. Ta'izz has a dramatic setting in the foothills of the 3,006 metres high Sabir Mountain which itself offers spectacular views of the city.

Understand[edit]

Ta'izz has a very different feel from other Yemeni cities and 'Ta'izians' are in general regarded to be more relaxed and laid back by nature. Inhabitants also have a reputation for being savvy and shrewd businessmen.

Get in[edit]

Ta'izz has a regional airport (TAI) which is served by Yemenia and Felix Airways. The airport lies around 15km from town and a contract taxi should cost around YR2000.

The bus company Yemitco runs services to Aden (YR800, two hours, two daily), Al-Hudayda, (YR1000, four hours, two daily) via Zabid, (YR800, three hours) and San’a (YR1500, five hours, two daily) via Ibb (YR600, 1½ hours). Al Raha bus company has new and spotless coaches running similar routes.

Private buses run to most major centres in the highlands from the Al-Esace bus station. Shared taxis run to Aden (YR800, 2½ hours, 20 to 30 daily), Al-Hoddeida (YR1200,four hours, 30 daily), Ibb (YR400, 1½ hours, 20 daily), San’a (YR1200, 4½ hours, five daily) and Zabid (YR1000, three hours, 30 daily) via Al-Makha (YR600, two hours, two or three daily) and Al-Khawkha (YR800, 2½ hours, two or three daily). The main taxi station is about 4km northeast of the town centre.

Get around[edit]

Hops around town by contract taxi cost YR500, while hops by minibus are YR50. Minibuses are numbered, follow set routes and will pick up and drop off anywhere by request. Route 3 runs from Bab Al-Kabir up to Saber mountain and back. Route 5 runs from the market to Al Kindi hospital and back.

There are some reasonable simple hotels in the town centre. The best and most expensive is the Al Saeed.

  • Al Saeed Hotel, Al Domaleh Mountain Al Hoban, (+967)4/200311, [1]. Used to be a Sofitel. Perched on a hill top overlooking the city. A very good almost 4 star hotel. It is the best in the city and possibly in the country. It has clean and modern rooms, wireless internet throughout (bad signal in the rooms though). Swimming pool. $180.
