Surt (also Sirt, Sirte) is a city in Libya. Best known as Muammar Gaddhafi's hometown. Prior to the civil war of 2011 it was bestowed with a number of governmental edifices subsequently destroyed by NATO aerial bombardment, relentless shelling by NTC rebel forces and then subjected to vandalism and looting of the remains following the killing Muammar Gaddhafi and the suspension of combative activities on 21 October 2011.

Travel Warning

WARNING: Libya is currently a war zone following an extended period of civil war and conflict. Travel within the nation's borders including to Sirte remains extremely dangerous and therefore strongly discouraged for independent travellers. Parts of Libya may continue to suffer from aerial attacks, artillery and rocket bombardment, armed engagements between combative ground forces, disaffected individuals, foreign military elements and militias. These activities are likely to be sustained and to involve the use of deadly force. Normal civil services are not available and the nation's infrastructure has suffered very serious damage from a sustained aerial bombing campaign and the use of heavy armaments by combative ground forces.

The city of Sirte was virtually destroyed as a result of prolonged bombardment and all travel to the city or surrounding areas should definitely be avoided.
