The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), or Soviet Union, dissolved in 1991, forming 15 sovereign constituent parts. The Russian Federation assumed as the successor to the Soviet Union. While 11 former republics becem new sovereign, independent countries, the Baltic States are considered the continuation of the their independent nations that were established in 1918.
