Sonamarg or Sonmarg is a town in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Sonmarg the meadow of gold is a trekkers heaven and has adventurous routes with beautiful green water and frozen lakes around.The vale is believed to be bestowed with mystical water which turns everything into eternal riches. High altitude makes it cold even during summers. It is advisable to always carry warm clothes and rain proofs. The everlasting thajiwas glacier,3km from sonamarg, provides a chance to enjoy sledge ride on snow even in midsummer. Ponies are avaialble up to the glacier from sonamarg. Ponywallahs will demand upto Rs. 1500 for one ponyride but will get you there for Rs.500 in off season- you will have to haggle. superb campsite in thajiwas area makes it a prime location for trekkers and during summer. Sind river is a natural hatchery of trout,where angling is great fun,provided the permission is obtained from the fisheries department. Ascending river makes sonamarg ideal for river rafting.


from gangabal ,a 17 km tough descend leads to naranag,where ruins of buddhist temples is built by jaluka,son of ashoka and also by king lalityadaty are still present.

Main attraction of this place is Thajiwas Glacier. Be very careful from the pony & car touts. This will always miss guide you and ask handsome amount to access them. Your travel car will not have access to reach Thajiwas Glacier. You must need to hire either pony or local car to reach there. It is just about 5 minute drive by car. They may be ask you about INR2000 for pony/person or INR10000 for car. Always negotiate with them. You can easily negotiate them for INR2000 for three point (Thijiwas Glacier, Fish Pond & Sarbal Park). In Thajiwas, you will get the snow but tout will misguide you for not having over there. At last if you want to enjoy snow in Thajiwas Glacier, Hire car for INR2000.

You can hire sledge-cart for INR100-200 and gum shoes for INR50-100 in May (which is peak time for them).

Don't argue with touts, there are many incidents of having quarrel and fight by them with tourists. They always argue that, There are having only 2-3 month season to earn bread & butter for a year so they are always trying to chop you as big as possible.


Get some woolen gear and gum boots for rent, start climbing the snow-laced mountains. People offer sledge rides, they charge Rs. 250/point (point refers to altitude of mountain divided into steps). It is better to rent some woolen gear and climb mountain and then hire a sledge to skate on snow from top.

  • Sonmarg Gangabal trek. The famous Gangabal trek starts from Sonamarg across the Sind River with steep Nichna Pass at 4080m. This rough trek of 15 kms from Sonamarg will certainly makes you stop at the first visible campsite in the area. Passing via Vishansar Lake at 3680m and further to Krishansar Lake (3819m) 14km, a marvelous campsite urges you to stop overnight. A 23 km trek to Gadsir Lake (3900m) passes through steep climbs followed by rapid descent, whereafter the magical Gadsir Lake appears,mostly full of broken glacier masses, a trek of 17 km via Satsar Lake (3600m) passes through Gangabal Valley,where the view of Harmukh Peak is breathtaking. A few kilometers of walking will take you to Gangabal Lake (3570m) at the foot of Harmukh; a plain campsite amidst the valley is an unforgettable expreince,
  • Krishnasar Lake. Krishnasar Lake is located a few kilometers from Sonamarg. The lake is dedicated to trout fish conservation. One can enjoy trout fishing in the lake, though winter time is recommended. At an expense of Rs. 200, an hour-long time is alotted for fishing.


One can buy Kashmiri Handicrafts at reasonable prices.Daily use products are thoroughly available in the main market.


All Hotels and restaurants serve Kashmiri cuisine.
