Solomons
From Wikitravel
For the island chain in the South Pacific, see Solomon Islands.
Solomons (Solomons Island) is an resort island/city located on the tip of Southern Maryland, near the Patuxent Naval Air Station, within two hours of Washington, D.C., and a convenient drive from Baltimore or Annapolis. It is also close to the Calvert Cliffs State Park, which is fun for fossil hunting. Located, as it is, where the Chesapeake meets the Atlantic, it's a popular destination for boaters. It also has a nice, though short, boardwalk at the tip of the peninsula and a lively restaurant scene.
[edit] Get in
[edit] By car
The principal, and really the only route going in and out of Solomons in either direction (north and south) is MD-2/MD-4, Solomon Island Rd. MD-4 leads from the Washington, D.C. border, and MD-2 from Annapolis. South of Solomons, MD-4 connects with MD-5, which heads east to St. Mary's City and west back to D.C. MD-5 westbound also connects with US-301, which leads south to I-95 in Virginia just south of Fredericksburg.
[edit] By boat
The two main marinas on the island are Solomons Harbor Marina (+1 410 326-1052) and Spring Cove Marina (+1 410 326-2161), each of which are located on Back Creek, Solomons Harbor, and offer long & short term dockage.

- Calvert Marine Museum, Route 4, Solomons, Calvert County, [1]. The premier waterman's and wildlife museum in Maryland. Extensive exhibits on the ecology of the Chesapeake Bay, including an impressive array of fossils and aquariums highlighting the array of creatures found in the Bay and its tributaries. Also includes a comprehensive display of Chesapeake Bay watercraft (the Museum sponsors a boat-builders' guild which restores old boats and builds new ones using traditional methods) and a completely restored screwpile lighthouse. Outstanding Childrens' Discovery Room where kids can dig for - and keep! - real fossils in the fossil pit, get up close and personal with Chesapeake Bay wildlife, and operate a sailboat (on dry land, of course). A must-visit for anyone seeking to understand the Bay and its history. $7 for adults. edit
