Shunan Zhuhai National Park
James BrowneShunan Zhuhai National Park (蜀南竹海国家公园) is in Sichuan province. It is also known as the The Bamboo Forest, The Bamboo Sea and The Bamboo City.
The Shunan Bamboo Forest (Shunan Zhuhai) is a huge bamboo forest the size of which is 120 square kilometers. The park is famous for the natural beauty of the bamboo forests, scenes from the movie 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' were shot here. It has two cablecars, plenty of waterfalls and lakes.
Flora and fauna
High season is from January till November. The best time to see the waterfalls is winter, there is no much water during summer.
From Chengdu. You can get here from Xinanmen bus station in Chengdu by taking a bus to Bamboo Sea in south of Sichuan. This bus will pass through Yibin and drop you off in a town called Changning. From Changning you can either hire a driver or catch a bus to the West Gate of Shunan Zhuhai National Park. The journey takes between 5-6 hours. Alternatively some travelers choose to catch a bus to Yibin, and from there take a number 4 local bus across town to the Yibin South bus station (Nan An). From there you can catch a bus to the park entrance. The last bus leaves from Yibin to the park at 4pm. It is also possible to hire a taxi from Yibin to the park for around ¥200.
From Chongqing. Bus from Chonqind to Yibin costs ¥90 and takes 4-5 hours.
Entrance fee to the park is RMB;112. There are two cablecars on the territory of the park, first is ¥40 , second is ¥30 for two way journey.
For ¥200-280 you should be able to hire a car and driver for the day. (For the whole car not per person). Or expect to pay ¥30 for 2 persons for a transfer between any two park points.
Please note there is no other transport inside the park.
For those who are feeling adventurous, try hitchhiking rides from passing cars to the points of the park you want to visit. If you have a park map to hand you can communicate with the driver where you want to go if you don't speak any Chinese. The locals who live within the park are usually very friendly and will go out of their way to help foreigners and may offer to drive you to any point along the way of their own journey.
Some Chinese visitors who are wishing to practise their English may approach you and offer directions or a ride to a scenic point in the park.
Explore picturesque walking routes inside the bamboo forest and around the mountains and waterfalls. Start as early as 6 a.m. to avoid local tourist groups. Moxi Brook walking track. 2.5 km walk along a pretty stream through bamboo forest. Also has small waterfalls. Qicai Waterfall loop track. Spectacular series of falls. One and a half hour loop. Take the cable car across a chasm to go to the Xianyu Cave and see the various statues and carvings in the precipitous Cliffside. Outstanding walk.
