Shaoshan (韶山, Sháoshān) is in Hunan province and easily accessed from Changsha by bus or train. Shaoshan is where Mao Zedong grew up and a popular destination for Chinese tourists.


Being the birth place of the Mao, Shaoshan is a pilgrimage site. There are several sites here dedicated to The Chairman including his ancestral family home. A large statue of Mao is located in the centre of the town.

Get in[edit]

Busses and trains for Shaoshan leave from the Changsha bus and train stations.

Get around[edit]

Most of the sites in Shaoshan can be visited on foot though local taxis are available.


Mao's ancestral home, a Mao statue, a museum dedicated to The Chairman and "Dripping Water Cave" a location Mao visited for some political meetings in the 70's.
