Santa Teresa (Peru)
Earth : South America : Peru : Southern Sierra (Peru) : Santa Teresa (Peru)
Santa Teresa is a bleak, one-horse town in the middle of Peru.
Daily buses run to Quillabamba from the Santiago terminal in Cuzco (7-8 hours, ~ 4US$) via Santa María. Turismo Ampay is the recommended company to go on this trip with.
From Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo), take the train to Hidroelectrica. From there, there are many colectivos to Santa Teresa.
Hike to Machu Picchu (four hours). Visit the amazing Aguas Thermales de Cocalmayo (hot springs a mile downriver from the town).
Avoid the dingy-looking restaurants that serve very iffy-looking food. Don't even think about the raw salads.
Hike to the hydro electric plant and catch the train to Machu Picchu Pueblo (two hour hike).
Take a colectivo to Santa maria, and then a minibus to Quillabamba.
