Ruis is situated in the middle of the the Surselva valley and encompasses both sides of the valley ranging from Obersaxen to Waltensburg

In the Obersaxen area, Swiss German, a dialect group of Alemannic, is the main language, yet everywhere else Romansch will be used. Everyone educated in a modern day school should however be able to speak German and probably English as well.
