Ratanakiri is becoming a popular side journey for travellers heading into southern Laos. You can fill time here while obtaining a visa. Now that the Vietnam border crossing is open, it is expected more people will begin to pass through east-west.

There has been some muggings around Banlung, and some gang robberies targetting isolated farms. You need to take care like any similar place.

In February 2009 a French tourist was shot during an attempted robbery at Cha Ong Waterfall outside Banlung. It emphasises that you should not resist if targetted.
