Prepare[edit]

As one of the most celebrated action adventure movies of all time Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark has everything you love about Indy. Hidden Treasure, daring escapes, globe trotting action, Nazis, and of course the lovely Ms. Ravenwood. So if you've ever wanted to follow in Doctor Jones' footsteps strap on your boots, tighten that belt and secure that fedora cause you're going to be in for a ride.

Cuispes high jungle forest

Peru Quite possibly one of the most iconic opening scenes ever. Indy is in full adventure mode as he sneaks into the cave temple in South America and swipes the golden idol before being chased out by the giant rolling boulder. This is the first lesson of would be adventurers, always have a sea plane ready for those quick getaways.





Kauai-Heiau-Poliahu-WailuaRiver-upriver

For those wanting to relive the harrowing escape from the arrow wielding natives in the movie just head out to the Wailua River in Kauai. There thick vegetation on both sides of the river provide amble cover in case of rain (the metal kind)



Burns tower

Stockton (California) Arriving back in the States, we come back to Indy's natural haunting grounds, his teaching gig at the fictional 'Marshall College' filmed at the Conservatory of Music building of the University of the Pacific in Stockton. The great exterior shots really convey the old intellectual feel of 1940's university life.






Nepalese Maoist checkpoint

Nepal Indy travels to Nepal looking for his old mentor, Abner Ravenwood only to find that he has died and that the Staff of Ra is in the possession of his daughter Marion. Indy being Indy, the encounter ends with lots of shattered glass, bullets and the entire establishment burning down.

Tunisia They whole crew then travels to Cairo where they learn from Indy's friend Sallah, that Belloq and the Nazis, led by Colonel Dietrich, are currently digging for the Well of Souls with a replica of the headpiece modeled after the scar on Toht's hand. To get the exterior shots of 1930s Cairo the film set out to Kairouan, Tunisia where the distinctive architecture still remain.

La Rochelle Unfortunately, the Nazis steal the ark from the Well of Souls and ship it to the Berlin. The port and exterior shots of the off loading were filmed at the french commerical port known as La Pallice in the town of La Rochelle.













Insel Agios Minas (Fourni)

Aegean Islands In a race against time and with the future of the war hanging in the balance, Indy and his crew follow Dietrich and his men to a deserted island in the Aegean Sea. Belloq plans to test the power of the Ark before presenting it to Hitler. Indy reveals himself and threatens to destroy the Ark with a bazooka, but Belloq calls his bluff, knowing Indy cannot bear to destroy such an important historical artifact.



San Francisco City Hall 2

San Francisco Back in Washington, D.C., the Army intelligence agents tell a suspicious Indy and Brody that the Ark "is someplace safe" to be studied by "top men". The Ark is permanently stored in a giant government warehouse amongst countless similar crates. The exterior and interior shots of the unnamed government building was the San Francisco City Hall.

To follow in the footsteps of the greatest adventure archaeologist isn't easy remember keeps these things in mind when attempting to perform this itinerary.

1) Always research the local laws and check in with your national embassy before visiting a foreign country.

2) It's helpful to learn a few basic safety words and phrases in the local language in case of emergencies.

3) Never carry around more cash then you need for that day's excursion. Leave your valuables in the room or hotel safe if offered.
