Smith Hill is a district in Providence, up in the northern area in Providence. Only a couple minutes from Federal Hill, Smith Hill provides a sense of entertainment and places to visit. Smith Hill is probably best known for their St Patrick's Parade and Bolivian Festival. Smith Hill has two main streets which are Chalkstone Ave and Smith St.


Get in[edit]

RIPTA - +1 401 781-9400, [8]. Ripta's services go across all of Rhode Island and throughout Providence. Buses 56 and 57 goes straight through the Smith Hill area. Bus 56 takes route to Chalkstone Avenue and bus 57 you down Smith Street.

Bike - If you have a bike, you can go up and down Smith Hill with no problem. Everything is close by in Smith Hill, that a bike is perfect if you do not want to use a car.

Rogers Rec Center - 60 Camden Ave Providence RI. 401-455-8854. Open from 12pm to 9pm. It is located right next to Harry Kizarian Elementary School, Rogers Rec Center has a basketball and a swimming pool open in the summer. The basketball court is also known to hold events, volley ball tournaments, basketball tournaments and more. In the summer, the pool is open Monday to Sunday, 12 PM - 5 PM.

Rhode Island State House - 82 Smith St. Providence, RI. The Rhode Island State House is located at the very beginning of Smith Hill, it borders the downtown area as well. At the state house you can take guided and unguided tours. If you take a free handed tour all you have to do is go through security and get checked, sign some documents saying you wont do anything to harm anything in the building. If you take a guided tour you can call them at (401) 222-3983 to book tours that are available at either 9am, 10am, 11am, 1pm or 2pm and the tours last 50 minutes. You can easily get there from smith hill by heading south down smith street or chalkstone avenue and continue down the street until you see the building appear on your right hand side. If you go by bus, you can catch the ripta bus line route 57 inbound from smith street or route 56 inbound from chalkstone avenue. You would then get off when you see the state house appear on your right side and you pull the cord to get off at the bus stop right outside the statehouse. From the stop you can walk right to the front of the building.

Bolivian Festival - 244 Smith St Providence, RI 02908-4933 (401) 274-9245. Held on August 15-16, the Bolivian Festival starts at St Patrick's Church and the parade ends in the ice rink downtown. The parade is a dedication to Virgen de Urkupiña. Saturday's time is 2pm through 9pm. Then, on Sunday, the fun begins at 2pm and lasts until 6pm. There is no price to enjoy this event. It is free admission.

St. Patrick's Parade This parade is on Smith Street. Parade starts at noon. The St Patrick's Parade closes up the whole Smith Street for people to participate in the Parade. This parade is a way for people to celebrate their Irish heritage. It has been celebrated on Smith St. for about 20+ years.

ALDI - 539 Smith Street Providence, RI 02908. Recently open in the beginning of the year, ALDI is the new Valueland (which coincidentally is built in the same area, same building as Valueland.) ALDI is a grocery store, that sells things for cheap. They charge for bags and to use a cart, it was 25 cents. Don't worry, after returning the cart, the quarter is then returned to you.

  • Off Campus Bookstore, 1017 Smith Street Providence, RI. Being in business over 16 years, the Off Campus Bookstore provides books for college students at significantly lower prices than those that can be found in University bookstores. Keeping the business in the family, the owners have found ways to cut costs to provide books for less to their customers and plan on doing so for years to come.  edit

PriceRite - 325 Valley Street Providence, RI 02908. This supermarket is located in a plaza called Eagle Square. They also charge for bags, 10 cents and there prices are low but it does get packed during the beginning and middle of the month. This does not always pose a problem though. The workers work quick and they use a good system to move people through the lines, they even have express lines for 12 items or less.

24hr 7eleven - 460 Smith Street Providence, RI 02908. This 7eleven is located at the intersection of Smith street and Chalkstone avenue. Its always clean and the staff are very nice. You can get things there from food to go or toiletries and things you would need quickly while going through the area.

Little Caesars - 539 Smith St Providence, RI 02908-4350 (401) 421-2212. It is located right next to ALDI, the "HOT-N-READY" pizza shop is open 7 days a week from 10 AM to 10 PM. Although they do not deliver, they do serve pepperoni for $5. It is also "HOT-N-READY", meaning it is already made when you walk into the store.

Mandarin Garden - 555 Chalkstone Ave Providence, RI 02908-3619 (401) 751-0144. A Chinese restaurant right in the middle of Smith Hill. Although they do not deliver they serve fine authentic Chinese food. This small family owned restaurant, may get busy at times, so it is better that you call in rather than waiting inside for your food to be done. Cheap prices for big appetites.

I Love Mexico - 283 Smith St Providence, RI 02908 (401) 273-2026. Recently opened in Smith Hill, I Love Mexico is a restaurant/bar. Authentic Mexican food is served here, with prices varying. Inside are 2 plasma TVs, making the environment feel comfortable for the costumers. The bar serves any alcohol of your choice.

  • Newport Creamery, 673 Smith Street, 02908, 401-351-4677. Sun - Thurs 7 am - 10 pm Fri - Sat: 7 am - 11 pm. This location, conveniently located right on Smith st., is the only one left in the city of Providence. It has a friendly, family oriented eating environment. It is an Ice cream shop and grill in one so if you are in the mood for anything ranging from a good burger to fish and chips or a couple scoops of your favorite flavored ice cream all available for a decent price you should consider Newport Creamery. They are also known for their signature shake, the "Awful Awful" which means its awful big and awful good which is available in a variety of flavors. The restaurant also offers an outdoor walk-up window for those interested in enjoying the weather and still having good food or wanting to have their favorite frozen treat.  edit

This ice cream shop conveniently on smith street on the edge of Centerdale offers 24 flavors of soft serve ice cream, multiple flavors of hard ice cream, as well as an assortment of other delicious frozen treats. Take the family out in the nice weather and enjoy the outdoor seating to enjoy a frozen treat or two.  edit

Little Chopsticks - 495 Smith Street Providence, RI 02908. 401-273-0049. From Sunday to Thursday little chopsticks is open form 10:30am to 10:30pm. On Friday and Saturday they are open from 10:30am to 11:30pm. They have a big menu and serve all types of Chinese quinine. Service is quick and the employees are friendly and service friendly. This restaurant is located a little ways in into Smith Hill. Its the next block up after the intersection of Smith street and Chalkstone avenue, heading north on Smith street and the big with the little house that says "Little Chopsticks" marks your destination on your right hand side. If your coming south down smith street, the restaurant will be 1 block before the intersection on Smith street and Chalkstone avenue.

The New York System - 424 Smith Street Providence, RI 02908. 401-331-5349. This restaurant has great history in Smith Hill. Its located in the intersection of Smith street and Chalkstone avenue. Their hours are 11am to 12am on Mondays - Wednesdays. They are open 11am to 3am on Thursdays and Fridays. On Saturday they are open 7am to 3am and on Sunday they are open from 7am to 7pm. The big illuminated sign draws you in. They gave an old school arcade game and even a pinball machine, this keeps the atmosphere just right for the establishment. They even have A walk and go window where you can walk up to the window outside and they treat it like a drive through. You can locate this hot wiener joint coming north up Smith street from the down town area and it is on your left on smith street right at the intersection of smith street and chalkstone avenue. It will be on your right if you are coming south from Chalkstone avenue or Smith street after you get through the intersection.

Smith Hill Tap - 465 Smith St. Providence (401) 331-3235 - a 21+ bar on Smith Street. A small bar with plenty of drinks and the price varies. Open til late into the night.

Club X - 681 Valley St in Providence, RI - an indoor club, but in the summer, also has an outside part to go party. Open 4 nights a week, you can party the night away. There are some days where there are themes, such as hip-hop night and Latin night. Depending on the theme/event the age limit varies with it. The prince ranges from 10$ to ladies free. It is usually 21+ for men and 18+ for women, but depending on the theme it may change.

  • Bradley's Cafe', 571 Admiral St Providence, RI, 02908. Located behind Providence College, Bradley's Cafe' includes a full menu of beer along with a mixed variety of mixed drinks all at a fair price. This is a College hotspot on Thursdays so if that's not your crowd, Thursday may not be the night for you. Come down and enjoy a drink, watch a game, have a bite from the menu and bump elbows with the locals.  edit

Patricks Pub - 381 Smith Street Providence, RI 02908. 401-751-1553. This pub is located on this first couple blocks of Smith street. This pub is a block before the intersection with Smith street and Chalkstone avenue heading north up Smith street it is located on your right. When coming south down Smith street or chalkstone avenue, it is located on the left side 1 block from the Smith and Chalkstone intersection. there hours from Monday to Wednesday are 4pm to 1am, on Thursday they are open from 12pm to 1am, on Friday and Saturday they are open from 12pm to 1am. This pub is more active in the evening times and plays like a family style lunch spot during the earlier hours when they are open at 12pm.

Lopes Liquor - 461 Smith Street Providence, RI 02908. 401-831-2199. This little liquor store is a quick spot that has all types of alcoholic beverages that you might want to grab on the go while going to an adult gathering. The hours are monday through friday 1 to 11pm and 12 to 11pm. Heading south down smith street the store is located on your left right before the intersection between smith street and chalkstone avenue. Heading north up smith street and going through the intersection will put the store on your right.

Marriott Hotel - 1 Orms street Providence, RI 02904. 401-272-2400. This hotel a very well kept and in a pretty quiet part of town in regards to residential traffic. The hotel sits next to a highway offramp but that doesn't seem to keep many people from attending. Around prom season many proms are held there so be weary of booking times. The services are nice and costumer service friendly.

Coin-Op Laundry Mat - 282 Smith St Providence, RI (401) 331-9562. The big washers are $3.25 for 20 minutes, and the smaller ones vary. The dryer is 25 cents = 8 minutes (50 cents = 16 minutes). This laundry mat only accepts quarters. You can make change at the front desk.

Elmhurst Hair Salon - 1017 Smith Street, Providence, RI. Family Owned and operated for over 3 decades now under new management, this shop has seen much come and go in the Smith Hill neighborhood. With an old school vibe and quality barbers behind the chair this shop is sure to give more than just a good cut. If you're in the are be sure to stop by.

Fargnoli Park - Located on Smith st between Sharon st and April ct conveniently located on the the Ripta Bus 57 route mainline. This park offers a playground for the children, a baseball field for local little league team games, basketball courts for all ages and in the summer time there is even a free water park sponsored by the city of Providence. This park is clean, well kept, easily accessible, provides convenient parking around the park area and is close to a Dunkin' Donuts, Pizza Shop and gas station.

Davis Park - 50 Raymond St Providence, RI. Located right at the beginning of Smith Hill, Davis Park is a great place for kids. Equipped with brand new playground equipments such as swings and slides, Davis park also has a basketball court, 3 baseball fields, and a track.
