Prachinburi (ปราจีนบุร) is a sleepy town, usually used as the southern gateway to Khao Yai National Park.

Understand[edit]

Located about 135 kilometres northeast of Bangkok, Prachin Buri, pronounced "Prajeanburee",a province next to the border, covers a total area of approximately 4,762 square kilometres. Once a prosperous town since the Dvaravati until the Lop Buri period, dating back 800 years ago, proven by traces of ancient towns like Mueang Si Mahosot, located at Tambon Khok Pip, Amphoe Si Mahosot, as well as, another ancient community, built around the same period as Mueang Si Mahosot and situated to the east of it, located at Ban Khok Khwang, Amphoe Si Maha Phot. Through these ruins, discoveries of historical sites used for religious purposes and other artefacts such as Buddha images, statues of deities, pottery, and bronze ware were found scattered in these areas.

It was also recorded that the centre of civilization has been moved to the present location on the banks of the Bang Pakong River. There were many administration alterations, from town, "Mueang Prachin", circle or "Monthon Prachin" in the Ayutthaya period until the early Rattanakosin era, to province or "Changwat Prachin Buri" during the reign of King Rama VI.

Get around[edit]

The city centre itself is laid out in neat and broad blocks. Can be walked around quite easily.

There are many tuktuks, and motorcycle taxis. these are mainly seen at the train and bus stations, but can be taken around town. The bus station is in the centre of town, a block up from the main street. Looking out from the Piamsuk Serviced Apartment hotel lane, it is a block to the left, then a block to the right. From here buses and minibuses go sporadically - BKK, Saraburi and Chachoengsao were the only three noted over a period of one hour. In fact, Saraburi is the only regular one.

There are various minibus stops around the city centre, all within a few blocks of each other.

There are restaurants in the city, not many though. When you locate one (there are a couple close to the Piamsuk Serviced Apartment Hotel). You will get a feed of decent Thai food quite cheaply.
