[edit] Get around

Walk or ride a bike. Potrero is tiny.

[edit][add listing] See

[edit][add listing] Do

  • Look for monkeys and other wildlife.
  • Go snorkeling at Playa Danta, Dantita, or Prieta. Hurry and experience the abundant wildlife there before the Catalinas Development destroys it all with condos and houses.
  • Talk to and hang out with the locals.

[edit][add listing] Eat

  • Restaurante Sol y Mar, (100 meters north of the soccer field, Playa Potrero. Next to the Auto Mercado Catalinas). Open all day, closed on Sundays. This family run restaurant in the heart of Potrero serves excellent, traditional Guanacastecan food. A great place to eat breakfast, lunch, or dinner and catch a glimpse of the authentic Costa Rican lifestyle. A simple, rancho style building with large Guanacaste tree trunk tables, and well landscaped with native tropical plants. Very popular among locals and tourists alike, and it is not uncommon to see Howler Monkeys playing in the mango trees that surround the restaurant. Specializes in seafood. Try the whole red snapper or grilled mahi mahi. The generous portions, excellent prices, accommodating, friendly, English speaking family make Sol Y Mar the gastronomic gem of Guanacaste. No credit cards accepted.

[edit][add listing] Drink

  • Las Brisas Bar - Wednesday night is Ladies Night, the only night of the week when things really get going. Free ghetto drinks for the ladies from 10-11. Should really be called 'Guy's Night' because of all the sketchy Nicaraguan men hanging outside staring at people. Good times to be had though.

[edit][add listing] Sleep

Find a local family and arrange a homestay. Most of the families in Potrero do homestays for Spanish students who study at CPI in Flamingo, so they are setup for this and are very welcoming.

A much better experience than staying at an overpriced, foreign owned hotel in Potrero. There are not many hotels, and none are very great.
