Philadelphia's Art Museum Area is on of the city's fastest growing neighborhoods, rooted by three unique cultural icons.

[edit] Eastern State Penitentiary

Eastern State is considered to be the world's first true penitentiary. Its revolutionary system of incarceration, dubbed the Pennsylvania System, originated and encouraged solitary confinement as a form of rehabilitation. The Penitentiary now operates as a museum and historic site, open from April 1st through November 30th. [1]

The Philadelphia Museum of Art, located at the west end of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park, was founded in 1876 in conjunction with the Centennial Exposition of the same year and is now among the largest and most important art museums in the United States. [2] This also where the famous steps that Rocky ran up, while he was training the movie "Rocky".

The first such school of its kind in Philadelphia, it is located less than a block away from Eastern State Penitentiary. Originally located in Manayunk, the school relocated to its current location in 2001. [3]

There continues to be scant opportunities for shopping in the neighborhood.

The food scene in the Art Museum Area is diverse, from Greek to Morrocan to Northern Italian to English-style pub food. The best bets are grabbing a bottle of wine and making a reservation at one of the neighborrhood's BYOBs.

The bars are clustered around the intersection of 24th and Fairmount Avenue, and largely favor micro-brews over cocktails.
