Peninsular Malaysia (Semenanjung Malaysia) occupies the Malayan Peninsula between Thailand and Singapore, and is also known as West Malaysia (Malaysia Barat) or the slightly archaic Malaya (Tanah Melayu). Home to the bulk of Malaysia's population, including its capital and largest city Kuala Lumpur, it's more economically developed than East Malaysia.

• West Coast - from north to south: Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Perak, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Malacca, plus Malaysia's capital city Kuala Lumpur and the new administrative centre of Putrajaya - the more developed side of Peninsular Malaysia

• East Coast - Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang - more traditional and Muslim, the islands here are glittering tropical jewels

• South - comprising just one state, Johor, two coastlines, and endless palm plantations

• George Town - capital of Penang and Malaysia's second biggest city, charming and very popular with travellers, famous for its hawker food

• Alor Star - capital of Kedah, gateway to Langkawi Islands + Southern Thailand
• Ipoh - capital of Perak, also well known for hawker food & pomelos

• Kota Bharu - capital of Kelantan, rich in culture and the arts
• Kuala Terengganu - capital of Terengganu, gateway to several popular east coast islands, Redang & Perhentian Islands
• Kuantan - capital of Pahang, it is known for its beautiful sandy beaches and nearby island resorts, Tioman

The main air gateway into the peninsula is the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), located about 60 km south of the capital. Another one would be Penang's Bayan Lepas Airport.

Cruise ships from neighboring countries such as Indonesia, Thailand & Singapore usually serve the two main sea ports of Port Klang (near KL) and Penang.

From Singapore, take the Johor-Singapore causeway to Johor Bahru or the Second Link from Tuas, Singapore to Tanjong Kupang, Johor.

From Thailand, there are a few land border checkpoints between Thailand & Malaysia. These include Padang Besar (Perlis), Bukit Kayu Hitam (Kedah), Pengkalan Ulu - Betong (Perak), Rantau Panjang and Pengkalan Kubur (Kelantan).
