Mount Pelion (a.k.a. Pelio or Pilio or Pelium; Greek, Modern: Πήλιο, Ancient/Katharevousa: Πήλιον) forms a hook-like peninsula between the Pagasitic Gulf and the Aegean Sea. Almost entirely enclosed by land, the Pagasitic Gulf remains warm enough to swim in year-round. With a ski resort at the summit (at Chania) the locals boast that you can ski in the morning and swim in the afternoon.
The mountains are entirely forested, with beech, oak, maple and chestnut trees. Pelion is a tourist attraction throughout the year: the mountain includes trails and sidewalks for walking within small and large beaches with sand or pebbles. Modern Pelio has twenty-four villages built with traditional Pelian architecture.
The mountain villages of the Pelion are well worth a visit. Built tucked away during the time that the coast was still unsafe from pirate raids, many of the mansions are heavily fortified, the doors that can be barricaded shut and musket holes covering the entrances. The best way to get around is from Volos Interurban Bus Terminal ("Yperastiko KTEL") (KTEL Volou). After every airplane arrival there is a bus departure to Volos city. If the flight is delayed, the departure of the bus can be flexible to board all the passengers.

The Pelion is criss-crossed by cobbled paths, taking to from sea level to the mountain villages - even coast to coast. Probably the best walking anywhere in Greece. A good place to stay if you enjoy walking is The Old Bakery in Ano Gatzea. They produce their own walking guide to the region with a large number of walks, all of which can be done from Ano Gatzea.
There is a good variety of beaches on Pelio. The west side to the Pagasetic Gulf has smaller sandy beaches with calm waters. Beaches on the east (Aegean) are huge sandy beaches with deep waters and sometimes big waves. The beaches in Pelion are numerous, many have been awarded with the title of “Blue Flag”. The water is crystal clear and refreshing! But the most important is that they are quiet and family friendly!
