[edit] Get in

[edit] By air

Porlamar Airport, the island's only airport, is about 30 minutes' taxi ride away, receiving local flights from Caracas. If you are arriving on an international flight to Caracas, take an internal passage to buy the local ticket.(You can change money at any car rental office or at the official kiosk.) The flight time from Caracas is about 30 minutes.

[edit] By ferry

You can boat in from Puerto La Cruz or Barcelona on the mainland.

[edit] From the airport

Taxi is the only option available. The price can be negotiable and is around 50 Bs. You need to have local currency on hand because changing with taxi drivers is not advisable.

Because of currency regulations it is better to book a room in Pedro Gonzalez through some local friend and ask his help to prepay a room. All big hotels' staff speak English. For smaller hotels, Spanish will be most useful. Be aware of high season periods which are August-September, January and Easter.

[edit] Stay safe

Attention is a must. Be careful walking alone in solitary places and carry a copy of your passport instead of the original. When changing money prepare the amount beforehand. If you are withdrawing a large amount of money from the bank, tell the officer you want to receive the money inside the room and then put the bills in your socks. They won't laugh - on the contrary, they will think you are smart.
