[edit] Get in

The valley is about a 2 hour drive north of Kabul. Turn right at Jebal Saraj and head to Gulbahar, then turn left, and left again before the bridge to Kapisa province. The road is tarred all the way except for some rough bits passing through the towns.

There is a police checkpoint soon after you enter the valley. Have your passports and you may have to sign a book / give car details etc. If leaving the valley it is unlikely you'll be stopped.

[edit] Get around

The road is a winding two-way tarred road, with the usual maniacal Afghan driving.

[edit][add listing] See

Massoud's Tomb is well worth a visit. It is currently (August 2009) undergoing renovation and expanded but everything is still open.

[edit][add listing] Do

Have a picnic, go for a (chilly) swim.

[edit][add listing] Eat

There are a few kebab places / chaikhanas - but best to bring the bulk of your picnic from Kabul.

[edit] Stay safe

Panjshir is almost completely Tajik and the Taliban have no foothold here.

[edit] Get out

The drive back to Kabul on a Friday is a very congested one. Better to visit on another day / return early.
