Nueva Esparta, the smallest state in Venezuela consists of Margarita Island and many other smaller islands off the north coast.

Ferries to Margarita sail from the mainland. Most leave from Puerto La Cruz or Cumaná but some also go from La Guaira near Caracas.

There are regular flights arriving at the Santiago Mariño Airport near Porlamar on Margarita.

Once on Margarita, most other islands such as Coche and Cubagua can be reached by boat. A hire car is a good way to see Margarita itself.
